In CBD latest news, Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed new legislation to create a state-regulated hemp industry. This industry will allow farmers to grow their own hemp and create hemp derived products such as CBD or cannabidiol.
This new law will allow farmers to grow and cultivate their own hemp legally. The Texas Department of Agriculture will regulate the process, which will include routine inspections, collecting fees and handing out state licenses.
With the law, farmers will be able to sell hemp or hemp derived products legally, as long as it contains less than 0.3% of THC or tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is the known psychoactive component in marijuana.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller said in a statement, “We have taken one more step towards giving producers in Texas the opportunity to grow their own hemp. Texas will become the leader in hemp production. We will be writing rules that will follow the passed 2018 Farm Bill. We are hopeful that this will be another tool for farmers who are currently looking for a way to diversify their farming operations.”
Until the passing of the hemp law on Monday, state law in Texas still defined marijuana and hemp as one and the same: still illegal throughout parts of Texas. While it is true both hemp and marijuana come from the same cannabis plant family, hemp is the only one that contains low enough levels of THC to not affect the consumer.
With the passing of this new law, Texas farmers will no longer have to be cut out of this lucrative agricultural market. In addition, Texas consumers will be able to freely use CBD without fear of arrest. The law is an attempt to clarify the grey area that exists with CBD and hemp derived CBD products.
The hemp law is expected to go into effect immediately.
