What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is an illness in which the body is unable to process sugar properly to use as a source of energy. Those who suffer from diabetes tend to suffer from one of these two types: Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 Diabetes-technically referred to as an autoimmune disorder, in which the body attacks the cells that are producing insulin. This type of diabetes is often treated with the injection of insulin directly into the body.

Type 2 Diabetes-causes the body to become insensitive to insulin, causing the body to produce too much insulin in response. Most people who suffer from type 2 diabetes often suffer from blurry vision, tiredness, constant thirst, pain in the hands or slow healing.

Regardless of the type of diabetes a person suffers from, the treatment is the same: it requires prescription medication to treat.

What is CBD and How is it Used?

CBD, also known as cannabidiol is a compound that is extracted from the cannabis or hemp plant and is then diluted before use. CBD is comprised of chemicals known as cannabinoids, which then bind to the receptors within the body’s endocannabinoid system to produce the desired effects.

The two types of CBD that are available are CBD that is derived from the cannabis plant and the hemp plant. CBD deriving from the cannabis plant is often associated with the “high” feeling often associated with marijuana. CBD derived from the hemp plant does not have any of the high effects as CBD derived from cannabis and is typically used to reach the desired effect in a legalized way.

CBD is often used as an edible, to be topically applied or to be taken as a few drops below the tongue. However, specific types of CBD oil can also be vaped, but they must be manufactured that way before doing so.

CBD Oil and Diabetes: What to Know!

Now that you understand what CBD oil is and what diabetes is, the question still remains:

How is CBD oil and diabetes linked?

Helps with a smaller waistline and lower levels of fasting insulin

CBD oil and weight loss

If you are overweight, one of the most significant risk factors to your health is the development of Type 2 diabetes.

While CBD, not often associated with weight loss especially CBD derived from cannabis, has been found to actually help with a small waist circumference as well as lower levels of fasting insulin.

In a study conducted and published in the American Journal of Medicine found that there was a relationship between cannabinoids and metabolic processes. During this study, 4,657 adult men and women were studied between 2005 and 2010 and given CBD. During the study, fasting insulin and glucose levels were measured over a 9-hour fasting period. Upon evaluation, it was found that there was a significant association between cannabis-derived CBD and smaller waist sizes.

Can help increase insulin sensitivity

People who suffer from Type 2 diabetes tend to be less sensitive to insulin and as a result, as less sensitive to the hormone as a whole. However, research has shown that CBD deriving from cannabis and that contains the psychoactive component THC, can actually help increase insulin sensitivity.

A study conducted in 2016 found that CBD with THC could be used as a therapeutic agent in controlling blood sugar levels in those who suffer from Type 2 diabetes. This study utilized 62 adults who were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and giving 5 randomized treatments consisting of CBD derived from cannabis, THCV and a placebo over the span of 13 weeks. By the end, it was concluded that CBD and THCV were tolerated by all parties and could be used as supportive therapy in combating diabetes.

Help to manage neuropathic pain

One of the most common symptoms of diabetes is diabetic neuropathy. Diabetic neuropathy is a form of nerve damage that affects those suffering from diabetes. It is often found occurring in the legs and feet, but it is not uncommon for pain to develop elsewhere in the body. Diabetic neuropathy is not only extremely painful but in severe cases, it can be fatal.

In a study conducted in 2006 found that when 16 patients suffering from diabetic neuropathy inhaled cannabis and CBD infused with THC, the individuals felt a reduction in their diabetic neuropathy. Although, higher levels of pain often resulted in high-level doses of THC needed.

Help protect against retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of vision loss in those who suffer from diabetes. It is also the most common cause of blindness in adults who don’t suffer from diabetes.

In a study conducted in 2006, it was found that when CBD was given to rats between 1 to 4 weeks, CBD was able to reduce neurotoxicity, inflammation and blood-retinal barrier breakdown in the rats suffering from diabetes.

Does CBD Cure Diabetes?

The answer to this question is simple: No. CBD oil cannot cure diabetes.

Depending on the type of diabetes, it is not curable on its own. There is no medication that can be taken and make diabetes disappear for good.

CBD Oil and Diabetes: Frequently Asked Questions

CBD oil and diabetes

There still may be a few concerns you may have when using CBD oil to treat your diabetes and that is understandable. Hopefully, this section may answer whatever questions you may have.

Should there be any concern when using CBD oil for those who have diabetes?

Similar to most over-the-counter medications or supplements that you can buy, there is going to be a few obvious concerns when using CBD oil, especially if you have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

The biggest concern you should have would be if there are any interactions between the CBD oil and any prescribed medication you are taking. However, keep in mind that since there isn’t much clinical evidence on CBD and its interactions to provide guidelines on how to take CBD safely with other medications, this may be a bit of a risk you may have to take if you want to incorporate CBD into your medication regimen.

Does CBD oil affect blood sugar directly?

With the lack of medical studies conducted on CBD, it isn’t certain if there is a direct effect on blood sugar levels when taking CBD oil. However, what we do know of the endocannabinoid system within the body is that it plays a crucial role in the regulation of metabolism. Because of this, the endocannabinoid system can help play a role in how the body responds to insulin in the first place, either increasing or decreasing the body’s sensitivity to insulin.

How CBD oil affects a person’s blood sugar will depend on the person. Some people have cited that CBD oil has no effect on their blood sugar levels while others claim it dramatically lowers it in a matter of minutes.

What’s the best CBD oil to use for diabetes?

There is no right or wrong answer here. Different manufacturer’s produce CBD based on a variety of factors such as the plant source the CBD comes from and what kind of terpenes are added.

The best type of CBD oil to use for those suffering from diabetes should be a product that comes from a company with a solid reputation. You also want to choose a CBD oil product that has been thoroughly tested, to ensure that it contains EXACTLY what is listed on the bottle.

What should I consider before using CBD oil?

If you are unsure of what type of CBD oil you should take or whether you should be taking CBD oil for your diabetes in the first place, it is best to talk with your endocrinologist or trained healthcare professional for professional counseling.

Do endocrinologists recommend CBD oil?

While most doctors will automatically recommend prescription medication as the primary treatment for diabetes, you will find endocrinologists who are mindful of the benefits of CBD and wouldn’t mind recommending it. However, most endocrinologists will only recommend it as a supplement in addition to your primary diabetic treatment.

Final Thoughts

It is clear that CBD oil can help those suffering from diabetes.

But can it cure the disease?

Absolutely not.

While there hasn’t been much clinical research done on the correlation between CBD oil and diabetes, CBD oil can go a long way in helping you combat the disease and living comfortably while having it.
