The body has a built-in endocannabinoid system, which can respond to various compounds. The endocannabinoid system contains two primary receptors known as CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors typically reside within the brain and within the central nervous system. CB2 receptors typically reside throughout the body.
However, those who suffer from obesity tend to have CB1 receptors that can be found in fatty tissue. While CBD oil is not responsible for activating the body’s natural CBD receptors directly, it is known for influencing the body’s endocannabinoid system to activate or block these receptors instead.
Thus, this activation or blockage can play a role in significant weight loss results.
CBD for Weight Loss: What Does the Science Say?
CBD oil has been studied to affect the metabolic system and help aid in weight loss in a variety of ways.
According to some studies conducted and published within the U.S. National Library of Medicine, CBD oil may actually help boost one’s metabolism, which in turn could help aid in weight loss.
One study found that since CBD is known to affect CB1 receptors within the body, CBD could help block these specific receptors. This means that therefore CBD oil could help improve a person’s metabolic profile by suppressing hunger and inducing hypophagia. However, it was found that it could increase depression and anxiety in some people as well.
Another study conducted in male Wistar Rats found that when injected with 2.5 and 5 mg doses of CBD, it blocked weight gain. This study found that while CBD oil is not only responsible and able to alter weight gain, it could help play a role in the regulation of weight gain.
Decrease in Food Intake
In a separate study, conducted and published within the U.S National Library of Medicine found that when rats were given a dose of cannabinol, it helped to reduce the amount of food consumed over a specific time period. However, it was found that introducing a dose of CBD made no change to feeding behavior as a whole.
Promotes Browning of Fatty Cells
Within the body, there are two types of fat cells that exist: white and brown cells. Fat serves many purposes within your body. Most importantly it is meant to store and supply energy to the body while simultaneously helping to cushion the organs. However, fat in excess can pose a variety of health issues such as diabetes and heart disease.
A study conducted in 2016 and published on the U.S. National Library of Medicine found that CBD oil could help aid in weight loss by promoting the browning of fat cells. It was found that CBD played a dual role in inducing the brown phenotype as well as helping to promote lipid metabolism.
Can Reduce the Risk of Metabolic Disorders
There has been a link found between obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. This is typically due to the overactivation of the CB receptors within the body, which could contribute to obesity.
CBD is used to help block CB1 receptors, which can help reduce the risk of obesity and other metabolic disorders.
What Are the Risks?
While the results on CBD studies as it pertains to weight loss have been promising, there are still a few risks to consider.
First and foremost, CBD should not be treated as a one all treatment for obesity. While it is helpful as a dietary supplement, it cannot replace what a healthy diet and routine exercise can do for a human body.
With that in mind, it is always best to consult a doctor before using CBD oil to aid in your weight loss.
At first glance, the link between CBD oil and weight loss show promising results. However, there still needs to be more research conducted to give definitive proof of its effectiveness. While it is true that CBD oil can be a helpful aid in losing weight, burning calories and suppressing one’s appetite. It is not a cure for obesity.
