Hemp oil cancer treatment has been around for as long as hemp oil has been popular. Hemp oil, or also referred to as CBD, has quickly become a popular home remedy that is being used to help treat a variety of ailments. Hemp oil is comprised of approximately 104 different chemical compounds known as cannabinoids typically found in the cannabis or hemp plant. Unlike regular CBD, hemp oil lacks the psychoactive component known as THC or tetrahydrocannabinol.
Hemp oil is used to help treat a variety of ailments such as anxiety, pain and sleep disorders. But is there really a basis for its use in cancer treatment? Is there such a thing as a hemp oil cancer treatment?
Before delving into the hemp oil rabbit hole, it’s best to know all of the facts firsthand!
Does Hemp Oil Cure Cancer?
So, the big question is, does hemp oil cure cancer?
The simple answer is no. Hemp oil is NOT a cure for cancer!
However, hemp oil is quickly becoming a staple in primary cancer therapy. Not only can it play a supportive role in chemotherapy patients, but it can help alleviate unnecessary suffering in cancer patients.
Hemp Oil Benefits for Cancer
If hemp oil is so crucial in helping to treat cancer, then what are some of its known benefits? There are quite a few benefits to using hemp oil alongside a cancer treatment regimen, some of which may help ease the symptoms of cancer treatment and ease discomfort whenever possible.
Nausea and Vomiting
Unfortunately, there are limited studies on the effects of cannabinoids in hemp oil to help curb nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. However, what has been found is that when patients take hemp oil containing THC, it helped to treat nausea and vomiting often induced by chemotherapy and help patients to respond quickly to the treatment who otherwise were unable to respond to standard antiemetic therapy.
Remember, keep in mind that this was only found to occur in patients that took hemp oil containing THC. Hemp oil without THC does not have the same effect.
Both cancer itself and cancer treatment can lead to debilitating pain. This is often caused by inflammation, damaged nerves or pressure on internal organs from the spreading of tumors. Because of the pain, doctors often have their patients turn to other natural remedies as a means to combat the pain without their patients having to deal with the side effects of traditional prescription medication.
Cannabinoids, not just hemp oil, as a whole are known to produce analgesic effects within the body. Using different modes of action, the cannabinoids have been studied to affect different pain pathways such as ascending or descending pathways. There have been several studies conducted to support the analgesic properties of hemp, many of which have found hemp oil helps to moderate pain using anti-inflammatory mechanisms. These studies have also found to support hemp oil played a significant role in preventing neuropathy often caused by chemotherapy treatment.
Chemotherapy can wreak havoc on the body. While it is crucial in helping to treat cancer patients, it does beat them up pretty badly doing so. One of the side effects of cancer and chemotherapy is loss of appetite. Studies conducted on hemp oil have found that it can have a stimulatory effect on one’s appetite, which helped to increase food intake in the process.
A cancer diagnosis is enough to shake the hardiest of people. Often times, this diagnosis has been known to cause anxiety in patients. Hemp oil has a long history of being studied for anxiety relief and these studies have found patients who took hemp oil had improved moods, a better sense of well-being and felt less anxiety.
Hemp Oil Cancer Treatment: How it is Used to Treat Different Types of Cancer
Hemp Oil and Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is often diagnosed with a very poor prognosis. It isn’t uncommon for patients who have been diagnosed with lung cancer to relapse shortly after their initial chemotherapy follow-up. This is why many doctors have been looking at other alternatives to help treat the cancer aggressively.
According to a report published on SAGE Open Medical Case Reports, an 81 year old patient who received a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the lung showed significant improvement upon taking hemp oil. This patient declined both chemotherapy and radiotherapy. After following a self-administered regimen of hemp oil or cannabidiol and undergoing a routine CT scan, it was found:
- The tumor located in the patient’s lungs had signs of marked regression, specifically in the left lower lobe.
- Regression of the mediastinal lymph nodes.
Keep in mind, this was marked in one patient and should not be used as an example to combat your own lung cancer diagnosis.
Hemp Oil and Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer has become a health problem worldwide. In fact, it is the most common type of cancer for American men to be diagnosed with. According to this journal article, it was found that using cannabinoids and hemp oil in treating prostate cancer resulted in depression of spermatogenesis, an increase in expression of both the CB1 and CB2 receptors of prostate cancer cells, a decrease in cancer cell viability and an increase in apoptosis of prostate cancer cells.
Hemp Oil and Skin Cancer
There are three major forms of skin cancer: melanoma, BCC or basal cell carcinoma and SCC or squamous cell carcinoma. A study conducted and published in the British Journal of Pharmacology found that CBD can work in conjunction with the CB1 and CB2 receptors within the endocannabinoid system, which in turn can help control the differentiation of skin cells. It was also found that CBD could help stop and reverse the cancerous process of skin cells before it even begins.
Furthermore, a separate study conducted and published within the European Journal of Pharmacology found that synthetic cannabinoids were able to help decrease skin cancers in mice.
Hemp Oil Cancer Treatment: Final Thoughts
Upon discussion, it is assumed that CBD or hemp oil can act on tumor cells, whether directly or indirectly via different pathways. It has been found and studied to have an agonist effect on transient receptors and apoptosis inducing effects. While there have been several cases reported, there aren’t enough studies out there to give a definitive answer on whether or not hemp oil can actually be used to combat cancer.
Knowing this, hemp oil is without a doubt a great supportive aid in fighting cancer and can help make cancer treatment bearable for patients.
