Hemp oil for diabetes treatment seems like one of those too-good-to-be-true schemes. But is there actual proof that hemp oil can help treat diabetes? Does hemp oil cure diabetes in adults? What are the hemp oil benefits for diabetes? Should hemp oil even be up for consideration as a potential diabetic treatment?
The truth may actually surprise you!
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic illness that is often characterized by the bodies’ inability to use sugar as a source of energy. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes
Often referred to as an autoimmune disease, people who suffer from this type often suffer from their own body attacking insulin-producing cells within the body. This type is treated by using insulin injections.
Type 2 Diabetes
Often characterized by the body becoming insensitive to insulin. As a response, the body produces too much insulin. Those who live with Type 2 diabetes tend to suffer from symptoms such as blurry vision, fatigue, extreme thirst, slow healing wounds and pain in their hands or feet.
What is Hemp Oil?
Hemp oil is a type of CBD oil, also referred to as cannabidiol. Hemp oil is a compound extracted from the hemp plant and then diluted, comprising of cannabinoids. These cannabinoids are used to bind to the receptors within the body’s own endocannabinoid system, thus producing desired effects.
Unlike CBD that is derived from the cannabis plant, hemp oil does not contain THC. THC is the chemical component responsible for the high feeling often associated with marijuana use.
Hemp oil can be applied topically via cream or ointments or orally via drops or edibles.
Hemp Oil Benefits for Diabetes: What to Know!
There are many benefits to using hemp oil on its own, not just for diabetes. However, it can go a long way in helping to relieve diabetic symptoms or helping to prevent the disease altogether.
Hemp oil can aid in a smaller waistline
One of the main appeals of hemp oil is that it can help aid in a much smaller waistline. One of the most significant risk factors to men and women of adult age is the development of Type 2 diabetes, especially if they are overweight.
In a study published in the American Journal of Medicine found that cannabinoids and metabolic processes could be connected. During the time of this study, adult men and women were studied between a 5 year period and given hemp oil. This study found that there was an association between the oil and smaller waist sizes overall.
Hemp oil can enhance sensitivity to insulin
Those who suffer from Type 2 diabetes tend to have decreased sensitivity to insulin as a whole. As a result, these people often become overly sensitive to the hormone. Hemp oil that contains THC, the psychoactive component found in marijuana has been found to help increase overall insulin sensitivity.
This is backed by a study that found THC could be used as a therapeutic agent to help control blood sugar levels in those who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
Hemp oil can help prevent retinopathy
Retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss in adults who suffer from diabetes. In a 2006 study, CBD from the hemp plant was given to rats between a timeframe of 1 to 4 weeks. Upon completion of the study, it was concluded that CBD could help against inflammation and reduce blood-retinal barrier breakdown in rats with diabetes.
Does Hemp Oil Cure Diabetes?
The answer is simple: No.
Hemp oil cannot cure diabetes.
Does Hemp Oil Help Diabetes?
Depending on the type of diabetes, hemp oil can help living with the disease more manageable. It can help by aiding in the relief of certain symptoms or helping to relieve anxiety associated with a diabetes diagnosis.
Hemp Oil for Diabetes: Final Thoughts
While it is clear that hemp oil can be a great therapeutic agent in fighting against both types of diabetes, by no means is it a cure for the disease. Hemp oil can be used to help alleviate pain associated with either type of diabetes, anxiety that can come from a diabetic diagnosis or help increase insulin sensitivity.
