When people think of weight loss, they often don’t think of MCT oil and weight loss together. With the rise in popularity for holistic remedies, it was only a matter of time before MCT oil and hemp oil for weight loss came into the picture.
So, how does MCT oil work for weight loss? Can hemp oil actually help you shed excess pounds?
Let’s find out!
What is MCT oil?
MCT oil refers to medium-chain triglycerides. Triglycerides come from chains of carbon atoms mixed with hydrogen atoms. Most fats contain these chains and are considered long-chain triglycerides. MCT’s on the other hand, consist of short carbon chains.
MCT’s tend to bypass digestive processes that other long-chain triglycerides go through. MCT’s travel through the liver which is then turned into ketones which the body then uses for fuel. What makes MCT’s unique is the fact they can cross the blood-brain barrier, giving them the properties most other fats don’t have.
How safe is it and potential side effects?
MCT oil is very safe to consume. However, as with most things, MCT oil can be harmful if consumed in excess.
The most noticeable side effect that you may see, especially when consuming MCT oil at first may be gastrointestinal upset. However, it is easy to get through this by starting with a low dose and slowly working your way up.
Another potential side effect of consuming MCT oil is the raising of total cholesterol levels. What you have to keep in mind is that MCT oil consists of saturated fats, known fats that can raise one’s cholesterol.
MCT Oil and Weight Loss: What does the science say?
Surprisingly, there are plenty of studies to support the weight loss benefits of MCT oil. Some of the research that has been done on this type of oil have concluded the following.
Boosts the metabolism
Unlike other oils, MCT oil does not end up going to your thighs or waistline. Instead, they go toward speeding up the process known as thermogenesis within the body. This is a process that helps your body turn fat into a heat source, also known as your metabolism. This process can help the body increase the number of calories it burns in a single day.
In a study conducted and published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health in 2008, found that when MCT oil is consumed as part of a weight loss plan, it helped to improve weight loss results compared to using olive oil. This study was conducted with the help of 49 men and women who were overweight between the ages of 19 and 50. This group consumed MCT oil compared to olive oil over a 16-week period.
Help lower cholesterol levels naturally
MCT oil can actually help to keep cholesterol levels low, which can go a long way in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. Another study conducted and published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health in 2018 found that MCT oil helped to slow down increases in body weight, helped to promote bile acid excretion, lowered serum cholesterol levels via bile acid absorption and helped to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
Helped to keep the body slim in the first place
A study conducted in 2017 was published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health found that when MCT oil was given to rodents during weaning, it helped to build a programmed resistance to being obese later on in adulthood. It was also found that MCT oil helped to safeguard metabolic development and overall health as the rodents matured.
Hemp Oil for Weight Loss: The Bottom Line
The bottom line is this: while there have been plenty of studies conducted on MCT oil to support its benefits, most of these studies have produced inconsistent and contradictory results. While it is true that MCT oil does have a variety of benefits that could help aid in weight loss, this only works when MCT oil is consumed in moderation.
