So, does CBD Oil really work?
Well, that is what we are here to find out.
During the past 3 to 4 years, CBD has grown in popularity. With the many claims that CBD oil can help treat a variety of ailments ranging from rheumatoid arthritis to reducing the frequency of seizures, it is no wonder people swear by this stuff. However, lately, even the FDA had to get involved with some companies claiming their CBD could provide holistic cures because research says otherwise.
But, does is this oil as miraculous as many people claim it to be? Or is it just that, “a claim” and nothing more?
Let’s find out the truth, shall we?
Does CBD Oil Really Work: Beyond the Hype
What is CBD oil and How Does it Work?
Let’s see if I can put this in simple terms.
What is CBD oil?
CBD oil, or also referred to as Cannabidiol, is just one of hundreds of chemicals known as cannabinoids that are extracted from the Cannabis Sativa plant. It is an oil that is created by extracting the cannabidiol directly from the cannabis plant then diluting it in a carrier oil for ingestion. One of the main psychoactive components of cannabis is THC, which isn’t necessarily found in CBD oil.
How Does CBD Work in the Body?
CBD oil works within the body by producing specific effects. The chemical compound of CBD attaches to certain receptors within the body in a section called the endocannabinoid system. Which compounds attach to which receptors depend on the CBD oil. Some of the cannabinoids may attach to the CB1 receptors, which are responsible for coordination, pain, emotions and mood regulation. Others can attach to the CB2 receptors which are responsible for the regulation of inflammation within the body.
Depending on the type of CBD, many people have claimed that it can work to help relieve pain, relieve anxiety symptoms, balance mood swings, reduce inflammation and even reduce seizures.
Does it Work…Really?
I’m going to be honest here…it depends if CBD oil actually works.
Let me explain.
While there are many studies out there to suggest that yes, CBD oil actually does work, those studies are few and far between. The truth of the matter is, there just hasn’t been enough research done on CBD oil to give you a definitive answer of, “YES, IT WORKS.” It is true, what studies do exist have shown significant results of CBD oil being effective if used in animals. But in humans? There really isn’t much evidence to suggest that it is effective.
This is where are the misinformation comes from. Look, at the end of the day, even science is oblivious to the true efficacy of CBD oil. There just hasn’t been enough solid research done, not on humans anyway.
So, if there isn’t enough evidence to suggest it works, what about the popular ways people have said this stuff works? Is any of it true?
Can CBD Oil Help Anxiety?
In a 2012 study, scientists found that when CBD was administered to mice prior to letting them run around with a loose boa-constrictor, the mice in question were less likely to exhibit panic-like symptoms. This study went on to conclude mice who were given CBD in contrast to those who only received a placebo, they were more like to experience less fear.
Again, this is the case in mice. Not humans.
There was a study conducted on humans recently. This study took a group of 60 people and administered a placebo, a dose of Klonopin and three individual doses of CBD in strengths of 100mg, 300 mg or 900 mg. This study found that during a public speaking test, the individuals that were given CBD experienced lower anxiety and showed lower anxiety like symptoms than those given the placebo or Klonopin.
Does CBD Oil Help with Pain?
It is certainly a possibility!
This study found that in rats, CBD helped to alleviate pain symptoms when it was given orally and topically. In a different study (one that hurts to even read) found that when given a dose of CBD, rats who were exposed to pain-inducing procedures such as injecting their paws with bacteria or constricting nerve endings, those mice were able to react less when exposed to pain than those who were only given a placebo.
Not an easy study to read, but again, the findings were promising.
Does CBD Oil Help with Sleep?
That has yet to be decided.
However, recent studies show the future can be promising.
There was a study conducted on patients who suffered from insomnia. This study found that CBD could have the potential to therapeutically treat insomnia. However, this was found in CBD containing the psychoactive component THC.
Most sleep studies using CBD are still in their infancy.
What About CBD oil for seizures?
As of November of 2018, the FDA approved a medication known as Epidiolex which contains CBD. This medication is typically used to reduce seizures in children and adults who suffer from either Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome or Dravet Syndrome. In order for this medication to become FDA approved, a study was conducted on 120 patients. These patients were given either a placebo or the CBD. About 40% of the patients who had taken the CBD versus the placebo were shown to have a reduction in the number of seizures they had and in some, the seizures were eliminated completely!
Does CBD Oil Really Work: The Bottomline
So, does CBD oil really work?
Remember, there hasn’t been enough research conducted on humans to give a definitive answer to this question. While there have been several studies conducted on rats to show CBD has a promising future ahead of it, it is important not to jump the gun just yet.
Yes, CBD is still going to be popular and yes, this trend isn’t going to go away anytime soon. But it is important for the public and health care professionals alike to keep themselves educated on the subject to see exactly what is going to happen with the CBD trend going forward.
So, before you decide to give CBD a try, make sure to do your own research first. Talk to your doctor and see if CBD has the potential to treat your ailments.
